Well, I don't know exactly WHY this is going on, (it is rare), but Kevin Chalfant seems to like debating with me about politics. I do not claim to know the answers. I do not claim that liberals are geniuses, or that all Republicans are evil and stupid. But, he and I have been going back and forth for the past few days now, having quite the discussion. I don't really MIND, really, I actually MISS having intelligent conversations with people, and I like Kevin a lot, so he's cool with me even if he doesn't agree with me about stuff. That is what America is all about anyway, right?? I don't think anybody can have all the answers to all the politics around us, especially when we are only allowed to see just a tiny SMIDGEN of it, and the media only wants us to witness 10% of it the way THEY want us to see it, while at the same time, listening to all the the loud-mouth "journalists" (I use that term very loosely), who try to shove their views down our collective throats all the time. How can ANYBODY really make any sense out of it???
Well, for what it's worth, here's the conversation, in case you're interested.....(My message to him today was to explain a little about myself and my background, (he probably doesn't remember much since he hasn't seen me in a long time), and why I feel the way I do politically.....he wrote back about some things I put on my Facebook page regarding the stupidity of Rush Limbaugh............
- ok, but Rush bashing pisses me off because he really isn't a bad guy. He is a watch dog and a great one too. You know dang well Obama was tanking with women so he created this crap to try to remove people from his opposition. Rush aint going nowhere.. trust me. If he does, we have big problems.
- He's anti-women, anti-Semitic, and racist. I don't like him for his inexcusable behavior and beligerrant attitude, and he acts as though HE has never done ANYTHING to be criticized for. I believe in free speech, IF it is responsible---not reckless and deliberately hurting others. He'll stick around, sure, but his advertisers won't. Sorry to disagree Kev, but when men start trying to tell me what I can and cannot do with my own body, I got a REAL problem with THAT. It is ridiculous.
about an hour agoKevin Chalfant- Rebecca tune into Bill Mahers and let me know what you think of him ok. I listen to Rush a lot. He is none of those people you just explained. Listen for yourself and not what other broadcasters say he is... seriouly. He isn't that. he soundbytes things and jokes about them to watch and see what the media picks up and they do it every single time. Tune in... he is actually quite funny.
- I do like Bill Maher MUCH better than Rush, and I absolutely LOATHE Bill O'Reilly. I have listened to Rush before, but a long time ago (during college), and not since then. He strikes me as a pompous bag of hot air. I went to college to be a journalist, but when I was told that all newspapers are written at a 5th grade level, I gave up on that idea. I miss Walter Cronkite-style journalism so much. The media (ALL of it) is nothing but FLUFF with a few actual facts thrown in for good measure. I avoid watching the news. I read it online instead. But MY favorites are John Stewart and Stephen Colbert. I went to the DC Rally to Restore Sanity and it was AMAZING!!
45 minutes agoKevin Chalfant- Why is it you like everyone I think sucks and you hate everyone I love? I guess that is what makes the world go round. Watch that Bill Maher though.. he bad mouths Jesus all the time.. I have to turn the station... don't wanna get struck by lightning... :^)
- (ya gotta inderstand, I am a small town country girl from a poor part of Michigan, all my life, until I moved to DC). I also worked at a Museum full of Jewish people, most of whom are typically more liberal minded than not. (and that is an understandable reaction based on their oppressive history). So I am still a poor country girl inside, married to a rich guy, living in a huge house that we bought with cash, in the middle of blue collar Steeler country, wondering what the HELL I'm doing here. Pete is a libertarian, and gas influenced me a lot too, but I am still "Rebecca from Sunnybrook Farm," too......y'know??
- (and HAS influenced me...not gas)!!
36 minutes agoKevin Chalfant- Here is the problem I see frankly. We can't fix the problem by spending our way out. It has to stop years ago already. Private sector needs to be encouraged to reconnect and start profiting again. If government controls everything, it will all run like the IRS, DMV and SS. They need to do what Reagan did and I see Obama is finally getting that, but then he starts pissing wars to divide and conquer the nation. That is not a good leader that does that. A good one would ask everyone to tighten their belts, but he just takes from givers and gives to takers... sick...
- What I have seen is that Obama has different priorities than most regular people, and he killed bin Laden, he ended the Iraq war, he is creating jobs, and he is working on the budget and deficit--BUT---one of the most annoying things about DC is you try to do your job, with 50 people all around you making it nearly IMPOSSIBLE to DO YOUR JOB. What I see all around him is blatant racism, veiled as politics. The plain and sad truth is, the opponents don't like him simply because he is African American. He has to not only clean up the 8 year mess that GW left him (like a janitor), but then he has to also rise ABOVE and IGNORE the racism, and do everything he can to do his job---while running on an obstacle course of enemies. That is what I see. I lived in DC for 10 years, and the stress of all the petty BS was just too much for me, my health was failing worse each year. It is the most dysfunctional place (and mindset) I have ever seen in my life.
- My idea to fix the deficit: line up 100 dunk tanks on the National Mall, each with a politician inside, and any American citizen can pay $20 bucks for 3 balls. Do you KNOW how many couch cushions would be cleaned out jist to see Newt get dunked?! I mean seriously, I would sell my CAR to buy as many balls as possible, so that we can ALL SAY "We The People" solved the problem TOGETHER, not just one party.
25 minutes agoKevin Chalfant- Absolutely false. Some of my best friends are black.. the truth is, he is turning us into a welfare state and he uses that for votes. He could have lowered corp taxes that he is doing now 4 years ago and truly stimulated the economy prior to handing GM to UAW and sticking up the stock holders butts but what do I know... I'm just a stupid conservative and not an genius liberal.
- I didn't say YOU were racist Kev...don't misunderstand...what I said was those opponents of Obama in DC that surround him have some degree of racism going on. I am not saying liberals are geniuses either. I see some as whacky dreamers who don't always see the bigger picture of the world. The short-sighted decisions are most often the ones that come back to bite us in the ass, right? DC likes to slap a band-aid on a gaping wound, but then they act shocked later when the whole thing hemorrages. Short-sighted thinking is what caused all the mess. Only the greatest generation (FDR era) thought LONG TERM about the decisions they made. If Obama is trying to think long-term with a view of a bigger picture than just the here and now, while surrounded by short-term thinkers who give him crap every time he turns around---can you see that since day ONE he has been set up to fail?? But he hasn't. He has plugged along doing all he can to get thru the BS and get things done. maybe not in the order YOU or the other opponents would LIKE him to do, but for every 100 stories that occur in one 24-hour day, the "news" only shows us 10% at MOST. (another fact I learned in Journalism classes that pissed me off). So you and I are at the mercy of what we are allowed to know, what the media WANTS us to see, and coerced by loud "journalists" (and I use that term loosely), who try to tell us how to THINK. It's all smoke and mirrors, a game of men, that often has no winners. Yet for some insane reason, they keep playing the same game over and over, the same way, and the crazy part is they believe they will achieve a different outcome.
So there ya have it. He hasn't written backto me yet though. I wonder if maybe heused to have these kinds of politicaldiscussions with his sister Melva, but nowthat she's gone, maybe he misses doingthat? I don't know. I'm not going to ask. It's
none of my business anyway.
The one thing he said that made me cringe
is if the government ran everything, it would
be like the DMV....HOLY CRAP!!! Every time I have to go to the DMV, I ask the people who work there WHY THE HELL CAN'T YOU PUT A FEW VENDING MACHINES IN HERE, OR PINBALL GAMES, OR AT LEAST SELL US HOTDOGS WHILE WE SIT HERE ROTTING AWAY FOR HOURS WAITING, OR---BETTER YET---WHY NOT HAVE A CASH BAR IN THE CORNER?!! SOMETHING!!!
But I never get a real answer. SIGH.
Hey, I'm only 43 years old, I'm not the mostbrilliant person on the planet, I'm stupidsometimes too, I don't know how to makesense out of bullshit sometimes, either. But IDO know when I see bullshit happening, andTHAT is EXACTLY what's going on in DC,and HAS BEEN FOR DECADES. Nothing new.
So Pete and I spent the WHOLE DAY walkingaround the Pittsburgh Convention Centerdowntown, to the Home and Garden Showthat is going on all week. WHEW, my feetHURT like you wouldn't believe. That place isHUGE, and 2 stories FULL of stuff to look at.I am beat.
We didn't get back last night from Ohio until3 a.m., and I got up at 9:00 a.m., to go tomy chiropractor appointment that I missedyesterday because of my hair appointmentthat took longer than I had planned. (Got myhair colored and highlighted). It's a goodthing too, because there were some greyhairs starting to show, which I REFUSE TOALLOW!!! (I assume you color yours too)?Maybe I shouldn't assume that, but usuallysomeone in their mid-60's has more greythan you seem to have...though I wish Icould get much CLOSER TO YOU to find out!
Well, I'm off to bed soon. Talk to you later, gator.
Love, Rebecca ps. DISCLAIMER: I do notmean to insult, or cause any grief to thoseweird people who may actually read thisblog and who might disagree with mypolitical beliefs and opinions. I'm just me.Can't help it. I am what I am.
